Carter Chase went from being a soldier in the Army to volunteering at Veterans’ Aid. The charity helped him through a dark time and he would do anything for them, including help plan a benefit concert. Q & A with the Author:
1.
Tell us about things you enjoy — what
you do for fun or personal satisfaction besides writing? I like
to spend time with my family. Which usually means weekly date night with my
husband and attending all the many extracurricular activities my children are
involved in. Life is busy trying to keep up with all my children, but I know
that someday soon I will miss it!
2.
When did you first realize you were an
author? Probably when I was in third grade and wrote my first book,
"The Day it Rained Jello." The cover was made of the finest cardstock
and contact paper available at school. The book was soon reproduced (by the
help of my grandma and a copy machine) and distributed to enthusiastic fans
(mainly my cousin who was in the hospital after a kidney transplant).

Have you done anything writing-related,
but besides actually writing your books, that seemed to get a lot of positive
response? Something that encouraged you? The answer to that would have
to be blogging. I began blogging for my family about my children and our daily
life, but I was always careful to make sure to sensor everything I wrote
because I was afraid of saying something wrong. But when you sensor yourself
like that, you aren't really conveying anything. I soon noticed that the posts
that I didn't sensor myself on got more responses. I realized that my words
could touch people if they were sincere. So I started a group writing blog with
a friend called Mormon Mommy Writers and it has been cited for two years as one
of Writer's Digests' 101 Best Websites for Writers. That has definitely been
one of my best writing projects besides writing novels. I'm quite proud of it
and the many people who have written on the blog to help make it the wonderful
resource for writers that it is.

What is the thing you struggle with the
most while writing? And how do you defeat it? I struggle with lots of
things when it comes to writing, but I guess the thing I struggle the most with
is actually putting words to paper. Different things have worked for me at
different stages. There was a point when I knew there were stories inside of me
waiting to get out but I didn't know how to put the words on paper. I would sit
down with an idea and...nothing!! I read a book called "Becoming a
Writer" by Dorothea Brande. It was written in the 1930's and her words
really struck a chord with me and I was able to break through whatever barrier
was holding me back.
5.
What is the “message” of your writing?
(For example, is your purpose to encourage old-fashioned values, encourage
romance, or do you have different purposes in different books?) I guess
my message would be that we can overcome the trials in our life, even
if the outcome isn't always the one we want, we can grow and become someone
better than we were before.
6.
What are your thoughts/feelings on
ebook vs. print book? I never thought I would enjoy reading ebooks. I
was quite hooked on print books, but I must say that I love the convenience of
ebooks. I love sitting in bed at midnight because I can’t sleep and
knowing that I have hundreds of books at my fingertips while still sitting
around in my pajamas. That being said, if an ebook is more expensive or close
the same price as a print book, I will buy the print book instead. If I’m going
to spend a certain amount of money for a book, it better be able to sit on my
bookshelf.
7.
How many books do you have out?
Are you planning a specific number altogether, either in this series or separately? Duchess
is my first published novel. It isn’t part of a series, but I am planning at
least two more romance books. One is already written but needs edits. The other
is halfway done with a first draft.
8.
Are your characters/stories/scenes,
etc. based on anything in real life? Usually there is something from my
life that has inspired at least part of my stories. In Duchess, the mom is
suffering from colon cancer, which is the same cancer that killed my mother in
law. This was done because I had to write what I knew. It was also a bit
cathartic for me as well. Though it was tough reliving some of my thoughts and
feelings from that trial, I was able to put some of my mother in law’s spunk
and words of wisdom into that character which enables her to live on through my
words.
9.
What are your future projects? Right
now I’m working on a contemporary romance that was actually the second book I
ever wrote. I rewrote it this past year and am working on edits now before I
send it to my publisher. It’s about a mom of three children that leaves her
abusive husband and goes to her home town to live near her parents. She files
for a divorce and finds a job working for Ron, the guy she jilted in high
school. She must learn to juggle being a working, single mother and her
feelings of inadequacy in all areas of her life. She must also confront her
past as she realizes that she chose the wrong guy in high school. I’m also
working on a contemporary romance that is a modern day pirate story that takes
place on a cruise ship. I’m having lots of fun with that one!
